Mr. Dallas’ top nightspots: 40 places where you can get a good drink
(August 22, 2014) These recommendations by Mr. Dallas represent convivial nightspots for upscale (or at least aspiring-upscale) tipplers, particularly those in their 30s and 40s who are out and about but allergic to Hashtag Harriets and frat-boy excess.
In keeping with the craft cocktail craze, and the general drift of night life away from mega-clubs, this lineup is weighted toward venues that can at least plausibly promise well-made drinks.
The list has been updated as of August 2014. Some particularly distinctive or reliably enjoyable venues are labeled as “Mr. D’s top 10.” Venues that haven’t been visited recently are marked “before 2013.” Contributions by staff writer Marc Ramirez are also noted. Table 13 (Mr. D’s top 10)
Table 13 aims to revive the supper club ideal, offering food and frolic in the style of yesteryear Las Vegas in an Addison strip shopping center. It mines the 1960s Mad Men mythology of skinny ties, curvy dames — sexy Vargas prints line the walls — and midday martinis. Table 13 offers those for $3 on weekdays. The name refers to the original 13 members of Frank Sinatra’s Rat Pack. Pride of place among drinks goes to the Sinatra 3,2,1 — three fingers of a select Jack Daniel’s whiskey, two ice cubes and a splash of water.
